Rwenzori Mountains Expeditions & Trails

Explore Uganda’s Rwenzori Mountains, trek to Margherita Peak, track mountain gorillas in Bwindi, and enjoy thrilling safaris in Queen Elizabeth and Mburo National Parks.

The Rwenzori Mountains are Africa’s great trekking secret. Ptolemy called them the Mountains of the Moon; they carry permanent glaciers within a few kilometres of the equator, and Margherita Peak on Mount Stanley stands at 5,109 m — Africa’s third-highest summit. Unlike Kilimanjaro, you will not queue here. Most days on the trail you will see almost no one.

The Six Peaks

Rwenzori Mountains National Park runs 120 km long and 65 km wide, with six major peaks separated by deep gorges: Mount Stanley (5,109 m, carrying Margherita Peak), Mount Speke (4,890 m), Mount Baker (4,843 m), Mount Emin (4,798 m), Mount Gessi (4,715 m) and Mount Luigi di Savoia (4,627 m). Our guide to the six peaks covers each in turn.

Choosing Your Route

Central Circuit Trail — the oldest and most popular route to Margherita, passing the Lower and Upper Bigo bogs on modern boardwalks. Seven to eight days for a full summit attempt, and the right choice for first-time and intermediate trekkers. It crosses every vegetation zone the mountain has.

Kilembe Trail (Southern Circuit) — the longest route in Uganda and therefore the best for acclimatisation, with comfortable huts along the way and outstanding views of glaciers and alpine lakes. Seven to eight days to the summit. Suited to experienced trekkers or anyone wanting a longer, more gradual climb.

Bukurungu Wilderness Trail — remote, camping rather than huts, and the wildest of the three. It passes four lakes: Mughuuli, Bukurungu, Bujuku and Irene. For trekkers who want the mountain on its own terms.

Shorter walks — the Mahoma Nature Trail and Bakonzo village routes run two to three days over about 28 km, ideal if you want the forest and the culture without the altitude. Full detail is in our routes and trails guide.

Six Worlds in One Climb

What makes the Rwenzori extraordinary is the compression of ecosystems. You start in savannah at 680–1,800 m, climb through Afromontane forest to 2,600 m, then bamboo to 2,900 m, then the surreal heather and Rapanea zone to 4,000 m, afro-alpine moorland to 4,500 m, and finally rock and glacier to the summit. Giant lobelia and tree heather grow to impossible sizes in the mist. See our guide to the vegetation zones and the wildlife you may meet along the way.

What It Costs

A standard Margherita Peak climb starts at around USD 1,300 per person, covering guides and porters, mountain meals, hut accommodation and park entrance. A full multi-peak expedition taking in Stanley, Speke, Baker and Luigi di Savoia can exceed USD 3,500, reflecting the extra days, guides and technical equipment. Transport to the trailhead and pre-trek lodging sit outside that figure. Our cost guide breaks it down properly.

When to Trek

The dry windows are June to August and December to February: firmer trails, better visibility, mild days and cold nights. March–May and September–November are wetter, muddier and mistier — harder going, but genuinely solitary. The Rwenzori makes its own weather in any season, so waterproofs are non-negotiable. Do You Need Mountaineering Experience?

For the Central Circuit, no — reasonable fitness and determination are enough, and most beginner treks take seven to eight days with acclimatisation nights at Nyabitaba, John Matte, Bujuku, Elena and Kitandara huts. The final push to Margherita crosses glacier and requires ropes and crampons, which your guides provide and fit. The Uganda Wildlife Authority has added a bridge across a glacier crevasse and extra fixed ropes on the harder sections. Start with our beginner’s guide, and see what to wear and pack.

The People of the Mountains

The Rwenzori is not empty. The Bakonzo have farmed these slopes for centuries, and your guides and porters come from the villages at the foot of the range. Trekking here puts income directly into those communities — one of the better arguments for choosing this mountain over a busier one.
