Where to Trek Chimpanzees in Uganda
Kibale Forest — the Primate Capital of the World
Kibale Forest National Park protects the highest density of primates in Africa, including about 1,500 chimpanzees. Morning and afternoon treks depart from the Kanyanchu visitor centre, and sighting success is above 90%. Kibale also offers the full-day Chimpanzee Habituation Experience, where you follow researchers from the chimps’ dawn nest-departure — the chimp equivalent of Bwindi’s gorilla habituation, and the heart of our 8-day primate habituation safari.
Kyambura Gorge — chimps in a sunken rainforest
Inside Queen Elizabeth National Park, the dramatic 100-metre-deep Kyambura Gorge shelters a small, isolated chimpanzee community. Treks here combine easily with game drives and the Kazinga Channel boat cruise.
Budongo Forest — on the road to Murchison
Budongo, at the edge of Murchison Falls National Park, offers excellent trekking with fewer visitors — ideal if your safari heads north.
What a Chimpanzee Trek Is Like
Treks last one to four hours through mature rainforest, guided by rangers who read the forest by ear — pant-hoots, drumming on buttress roots, shaking branches. When you find the community, you’ll spend a full hour watching them groom, squabble, feed, and swing overhead. Chimps move fast and on the ground, so expect brisk walking rather than steep climbing; most reasonably fit travelers manage comfortably. The minimum age is 12 in Kibale — lower than gorilla trekking’s 15.
Chimpanzee Permits
Chimpanzee permits cost a fraction of gorilla permits and are easier to secure, though Kibale’s morning slots still sell out in peak season. We confirm current UWA rates and availability for your dates when you inquire — permit handling is included in every itinerary we build.

Frequently Asked Questions
Gorillas or chimps — if I can only do one?
Gorillas for awe, chimps for action. But at chimp-permit prices, doing both adds little cost to a gorilla itinerary — which is why nearly all our gorilla safaris include a Kibale or Kyambura day.
How fit do I need to be?
Moderate fitness: forest trails are mostly flat to rolling, but the pace can be quick when the community is on the move.
When is the best time?
Year-round, with the dry seasons (June–September, December–February) offering the easiest trail conditions — the same windows as gorilla trekking.
