Gorilla Safari Facts: Uganda and Rwanda
A safari in East Africa is often considered incomplete without encountering the majestic Mountain Gorilla in its natural habitat. Gorilla trekking in Uganda and Rwanda offers travelers a rare opportunity to observe these gentle giants up close in the dense forests of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, Mgahinga Gorilla National Park, and Volcanoes National Park. This unforgettable wildlife experience is one of Africa’s most sought-after adventures.
Gorilla Trekking Permits
To participate in gorilla trekking, visitors must obtain a gorilla permit in advance. These permits allow a limited number of people to visit a gorilla family each day, ensuring minimal disturbance to the animals.
Only 8 visitors per gorilla group are allowed per day. Because permits are limited and highly sought after, it is recommended to book at least three months in advance, especially during peak travel seasons.
Gorilla Permits in Uganda
Gorilla permits in Uganda currently cost USD $700 per person. These permits are issued by the Uganda Wildlife Authority and must be paid in full at the time of booking.
Gorilla Permits in Rwanda
In Rwanda, permits cost USD $1500 per person. They include park entry fees and are issued by the Rwanda Development Board. As with Uganda, the permit must be paid in full in advance.
Gorilla Trekking Rules and Conditions
To protect both visitors and gorillas, strict trekking guidelines are followed:
-
Visitors showing signs of contagious illnesses such as flu or colds will not be allowed to trek.
-
If a visitor is declared unfit to trek due to illness, up to 50% of the permit fee may be refunded, subject to the park authority’s discretion.
-
Permits are generally non-refundable. However, if visitors trek all day and fail to see gorillas (a rare occurrence), 50% of the trekking fee may be refunded.
-
Purchasing a permit does not guarantee a clear sighting, although sightings are extremely likely.
-
The minimum age for gorilla trekking is 15 years.
Conservation Impact of Gorilla Permits
By purchasing a gorilla trekking permit, visitors directly contribute to the conservation of the Mountain Gorilla. Revenue from permits helps manage national parks and fund wildlife protection programs.
Additionally, about 20% of park entrance fees are invested in community development projects for people living near the parks. These initiatives support education, healthcare, and sustainable livelihoods, helping local communities benefit from tourism while protecting wildlife habitats.
