Day 1: Nyakalengija (1,615m) – Nyabitaba Camp (2,651m)
Your adventure into the legendary Rwenzori Mountains National Park begins at Nyakalengija, the base for the Central Circuit trail. After meeting your experienced mountain guides and porters and completing a short briefing, the trek starts through local farmland before entering the lush montane forest of the Rwenzori Mountains.
The trail follows the scenic Mubuku River valley and crosses the Mahoma River before ascending steadily along a ridge leading to Nyabitaba Camp. This first day offers a wonderful introduction to the biodiversity of the Rwenzori Mountains. Along the way, trekkers often hear chimpanzees echoing through the forest canopy and may encounter black-and-white colobus monkeys, blue monkeys, and the striking Rwenzori turaco.
After approximately 6–7 hours of hiking, you arrive at Nyabitaba Camp where you enjoy dinner and your first night on the mountain.
Day 2: Nyabitaba Camp – John Matte Camp (3,505m)
The day begins with a descent through the forest to the famous Kurt Shafer Bridge, located at the confluence of the Mubuku and Bujuku rivers. From here the trail climbs steadily through dense bamboo forest and across sections of moss-covered rock.
As you ascend higher, the vegetation begins to change, gradually transitioning into the fascinating afro-alpine zone characterized by giant heathers, lobelias, and groundsels. From the Nyamuleju rock shelter, trekkers enjoy their first distant views of Mount Stanley and Mount Speke.
After navigating the challenging Bigo Bog, you finally reach John Matte Camp for dinner and overnight.
Hiking time: approximately 7–8 hours.
Day 3: John Matte Camp – Bujuku Camp (3,962m)
From John Matte Camp the trail descends slightly before crossing the Bujuku River and entering the vast Lower Bigo Bog, a dramatic high-altitude wetland filled with towering giant lobelias.
The trail requires careful stepping from tussock to tussock while crossing the marshy terrain. Eventually the landscape opens to reveal the breathtaking Bujuku Valley and Lake Bujuku, surrounded by towering peaks.
The camp lies beneath the imposing slopes of Mount Baker and Mount Speke, making it one of the most scenic locations in the Rwenzori Mountains. This camp also serves as an important acclimatization point before attempting the major summits.

Hiking time: approximately 4–5 hours.
Day 4: Summit Mount Speke – Return to Bujuku Camp
Today begins very early as you prepare to climb Mount Speke, the second-highest mountain in the Rwenzori range.
The ascent passes through Stuhlmann Pass at 4,192 meters, offering dramatic views toward the Virunga Mountains in the Democratic Republic of Congo. After several hours of steady climbing, you reach Vittorio Emanuele Peak, the highest point on Mount Speke.

The climb involves crossing glaciers, navigating icy rock faces, and traversing the Stanley Plateau. The summit push requires focus, endurance, and the guidance of experienced mountaineering guides.
After approximately 4–5 hours of climbing, you reach the summit of Margherita Peak at 5,109 meters, where spectacular panoramic views of the Rwenzori range await.
After descending to Elena Camp for lunch, the journey continues down to Scott-Elliot Pass and onward to the scenic Kitandara Lakes where you spend the night at Kitandara Camp.
Descent time: 3–4 hours.
Day 7: Summit Mount Baker – Return to Kitandara Camp
Another exciting summit day begins with an early ascent of Mount Baker.
