This 11-day Rwenzori trekking expedition follows the remote Bukurungu Trail to the summit of Margherita Peak (5,109 m), the highest point in Uganda and the third-highest mountain in Africa. The journey begins in Kampala and travels west to Kasese, the gateway to the legendary Rwenzori Mountains National Park.
Unlike the more commonly used Central Circuit, the Bukurungu Trail offers a true wilderness trekking experience with camping in remote alpine landscapes. Trekkers pass through diverse ecological zones ranging from tropical montane forests and bamboo valleys to giant lobelia fields and glacial valleys before reaching the icy summit of Mount Stanley. Along the route, climbers encounter the rich biodiversity of the Rwenzori Mountains, including unique plant species, rare birds such as the Rwenzori Turaco, and primates like colobus and blue monkeys.
The highlight of the expedition is the summit push to Margherita Peak, where climbers stand on the highest point of the Rwenzori Mountains and enjoy breathtaking views across Uganda and the neighboring Democratic Republic of the Congo. This adventure is ideal for experienced trekkers seeking a challenging but rewarding high-altitude expedition combined with pristine wilderness camping.
