The 7 Days Rwenzori Central Circuit Trek with Margherita Peak summit is the ultimate mountaineering adventure in East Africa. This challenging expedition takes hikers deep into the spectacular landscapes of Rwenzori Mountains National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site known for its glaciers, alpine valleys, and rare mountain ecosystems.
Often called the Rwenzori Mountains, this legendary range rises along the border between Uganda and the Democratic Republic of Congo. The trek follows the famous Central Circuit trail and culminates with a summit attempt of Margherita Peak, the highest point of Mount Stanley and the third-highest mountain peak in Africa at 5,109 meters above sea level.

Day 1: Nyakalengija to Nyabitaba Camp
Your trekking expedition begins at Nyakalengija, where the offices of Rwenzori Mountaineering Services are located.
After meeting your guides and porters and preparing trekking equipment, the trail begins through local farmland before entering the lush rainforest of Rwenzori Mountains National Park.
The path follows the Mubuku River, crosses the Mahoma River, and climbs steeply up a ridge toward Nyabitaba Camp. Wildlife sightings along the way may include black-and-white colobus monkeys, blue monkeys, and the vibrant Rwenzori Turaco.
The hike takes approximately 6 to 7 hours.
Overnight at Nyabitaba Camp.
Day 2: Nyabitaba Camp to John Matte Camp
After breakfast, the trail descends through dense forest to Kurt Shafer Bridge, located where the Mubuku and Bujuku rivers meet.
From here the trek continues through bamboo forest and across slippery moss-covered rocks before reaching Nyamuleju Rock Shelter, where hikers can see Mount Stanley and Mount Speke rising above the valley.
The trail then enters the afro-alpine vegetation zone dominated by giant heathers, lobelias, and groundsels before arriving at John Matte Camp.
The hike takes approximately 7 to 8 hours.

Day 3: John Matte Camp to Bujuku Camp
From John Matte Camp the trail crosses the Bujuku River and enters Lower Bigo Bog, an alpine wetland famous for its giant lobelia plants.
Trekkers carefully cross the bog by stepping from tussock to tussock before continuing toward Upper Bigo Bog and eventually reaching the beautiful Bujuku Lake.
Nestled in a dramatic valley below towering peaks, Bujuku Camp lies between Mount Baker, Mount Speke, and Mount Stanley.
The hike takes approximately 4 to 5 hours.

Day 4: Bujuku Camp to Elena Camp
Leaving Bujuku Camp, the trail climbs steeply through boggy terrain and passes through the spectacular Groundsel Gully, known for its towering giant groundsels.
At a trail junction, the path to the left leads to Scott-Elliot Pass and Kitandara Lakes, while the trail to the right climbs steeply toward Elena Camp, located on the slopes of Mount Stanley.
This high-altitude camp sits among rocky boulders and icy terrain, providing the final staging point for climbers attempting Margherita Peak.
The hike takes approximately 5 to 6 hours.

Day 5: Margherita Peak Summit – Kitandara Camp
The summit attempt begins very early in the morning with a challenging climb toward Margherita Peak, the highest peak in the Rwenzori Mountains at 5,109 meters.
The ascent takes approximately 4 to 5 hours and involves crossing glaciers, scrambling over slippery rocks, and navigating exposed alpine terrain.
Upon reaching the summit, trekkers are rewarded with breathtaking views of the surrounding peaks and glaciers.
After descending back to Elena Camp for lunch, the trek continues across Scott-Elliot Pass, offering spectacular views of Bujuku Valley and Mount Speke.
The trail then descends past the scenic Kitandara Lakes for overnight at Kitandara Camp.
The descent takes approximately 3 to 4 hours.
Day 6: Kitandara Camp to Guy Yeoman Camp
From Kitandara Camp the trail climbs steeply along the southern slopes of Mount Baker toward Freshfield Pass at 4,282 meters.
From the pass hikers enjoy panoramic views into the Democratic Republic of Congo and the northern slopes of Mount Stanley.
The trail then descends through alpine moss and rocky slopes toward Bujongolo Rock Shelter, the historic base camp used during the 1906 expedition by the Duke of Abruzzi.
Continue descending to Guy Yeoman Camp for overnight.
The hike takes approximately 6 to 7 hours.
Day 7: Guy Yeoman Camp to Nyakalengija
The final day begins with a long descent through the cliffs of Kichuchu before crossing the Mubuku River twice through bamboo forest.
The trail reconnects with Nyabitaba Camp before continuing through rainforest back to Nyakalengija, marking the end of your remarkable Rwenzori Mountains expedition.
The descent takes approximately 7 to 8 hours.
