The 6 Days Rwenzori Central Circuit Trek is one of the most scenic hiking adventures in East Africa, offering trekkers the opportunity to explore the breathtaking landscapes of Rwenzori Mountains National Park.

Often referred to as the Rwenzori Mountains, this remarkable mountain range is famous for its dramatic peaks, glacial valleys, alpine lakes, and unique vegetation zones. The Central Circuit trail passes through diverse ecosystems ranging from tropical rainforest and bamboo forests to alpine bogs and rocky mountain passes.

This six-day trek provides a complete circuit experience, taking hikers deep into the heart of the Rwenzori Mountains while offering spectacular views of famous peaks including Mount Stanley, Mount Speke, and Mount Baker.

Day 1: Nyakalengija to Nyabitaba Camp

Your adventure begins at Nyakalengija, the main starting point for trekking expeditions into the Rwenzori Mountains and home to Rwenzori Mountaineering Services.

After meeting your guides and porters and completing the necessary preparations, the trail begins by passing through cultivated farmland before entering the dense tropical forest of Rwenzori Mountains National Park.

The path follows the Mubuku River and crosses the Mahoma River before climbing steeply along a ridge toward Nyabitaba Camp.

Along this section of the trek, hikers may spot wildlife including black-and-white colobus monkeys, blue monkeys, and hear chimpanzees calling through the forest canopy. Bird lovers may also see the brightly colored Rwenzori Turaco.

The hike takes approximately 6 to 7 hours.

Overnight at Nyabitaba Camp.

Day 2: Nyabitaba Camp to John Matte Camp

After breakfast, the trail descends through the forest to Kurt Shafer Bridge, located at the confluence of the Mubuku and Bujuku rivers.

The trek continues through bamboo forest and across slippery moss-covered rocks before reaching Nyamuleju Rock Shelter, where hikers can enjoy magnificent views of Mount Stanley and Mount Speke.

The landscape gradually transitions into the afro-alpine zone filled with giant heather, lobelias, and groundsels before reaching John Matte Camp.

The hike takes approximately 7 to 8 hours.

Day 3: John Matte Camp to Bujuku Camp

From John Matte Camp, the trail descends to cross the Bujuku River before entering Lower Bigo Bog, a fascinating alpine wetland dominated by giant lobelia plants.

Trekkers carefully move across the bog by stepping from tussock to tussock before continuing toward Upper Bigo Bog, eventually reaching the scenic Bujuku Lake.

Located in a dramatic valley beneath towering peaks, Bujuku Camp sits between Mount Baker, Mount Speke, and Mount Stanley.

The hike takes approximately 4 to 5 hours.

Overnight at Bujuku Camp.

Day 4: Bujuku Camp to Kitandara Camp

Leaving Bujuku Camp, the trail climbs steeply through boggy terrain and passes through the magical Groundsel Gully, an area famous for its towering giant groundsels.

At a junction along the trail, the route to the right leads to Elena Camp for trekkers attempting to climb Margherita Peak on Mount Stanley.

The Central Circuit trail continues through Scott-Elliot Pass, offering spectacular views of Bujuku Lake and Mount Speke.

The route then descends through an alpine landscape of rocky boulders and sparse vegetation before reaching the beautiful Kitandara Lakes.

Overnight at Kitandara Camp.

The hike takes approximately 5 to 6 hours.

Day 5: Kitandara Camp to Guy Yeoman Camp

From Kitandara, the trail climbs steeply up the headwall beneath Mount Baker, continuing toward Freshfield Pass at 4,282 meters.

From the pass, trekkers enjoy breathtaking views toward the Democratic Republic of Congo and the northern slopes of Mount Stanley.

The trail then descends through high alpine terrain toward the historic Bujongolo Rock Shelter, which served as the base camp during the famous 1906 expedition by the Duke of Abruzzi.

Continue descending to Guy Yeoman Camp for overnight.

The hike takes approximately 6 to 7 hours.

Day 6: Guy Yeoman Camp to Nyakalengija

On the final day, begin the descent from Guy Yeoman Camp through the cliffs of Kichuchu before crossing the Mubuku River twice through bamboo forest.

The trail reconnects with Nyabitaba Camp before continuing through tropical rainforest back to Nyakalengija, marking the completion of the Central Circuit.

The descent takes approximately 7 to 8 hours.
