The 5 Days Mount Speke Trek is one of the most rewarding mountain adventures in East Africa. Located within the spectacular Rwenzori Mountains National Park, this trek takes hikers deep into the legendary Rwenzori Mountains.
This adventure follows the famous Central Circuit Trail, passing through lush tropical forests, bamboo zones, alpine bogs, and dramatic glacial valleys before reaching the summit of Mount Speke.
The trek culminates at Vittorio Emanuele Peak, which rises to 4,890 meters above sea level, offering spectacular views of surrounding peaks including Mount Stanley and Mount Baker.

Day 1: Nyakalengija to Nyabitaba Camp
Your trekking journey begins at Nyakalengija, the main trailhead for Rwenzori expeditions and home to Rwenzori Mountaineering Services.
After meeting your experienced guides and porters, the trek begins through cultivated farmland before entering the dense rainforest of Rwenzori Mountains National Park.
The trail follows the Mubuku River and crosses the Mahoma River before climbing steeply along a ridge toward Nyabitaba Camp.
Along the way hikers may encounter wildlife such as:
• Black-and-white colobus monkeys
• Blue monkeys
• Chimpanzees in the forest canopy
• The colorful Rwenzori Turaco
The trek takes approximately 6 to 7 hours.
Overnight at Nyabitaba Camp.
Day 2: Nyabitaba Camp to John Matte Camp
After breakfast, the trail descends through the forest to Kurt Shafer Bridge, located at the confluence of the Mubuku and Bujuku rivers.
From here the trail climbs through dense bamboo forest and crosses slippery moss-covered rocks before reaching Nyamuleju Rock Shelter, where hikers can enjoy views of Mount Stanley and Mount Speke.
The vegetation gradually changes into the afro-alpine zone dominated by giant heather, lobelias, and groundsels before reaching John Matte Camp.
The hike takes approximately 7 to 8 hours.
Overnight at John Matte Camp.
Day 3: John Matte Camp to Bujuku Camp
From John Matte Camp, the trail descends to cross the Bujuku River before entering the famous Lower Bigo Bog, an alpine wetland filled with giant lobelias.
Trekkers carefully navigate the bog by stepping from tussock to tussock before continuing toward Upper Bigo Bog, eventually reaching the scenic Bujuku Lake.
Located in a dramatic valley below Stuhlmann Pass, Bujuku Camp sits between towering peaks including Mount Baker, Mount Speke, and Mount Stanley.
This camp is an important acclimatization point for trekkers attempting summit climbs.
The hike takes approximately 4 to 5 hours.
Overnight at Bujuku Camp.
Day 4: Summit Mount Speke – Return to John Matte
The summit attempt begins early in the morning with a climb toward Stuhlmann Pass at 4,192 meters.
From here the trail continues toward the summit of Mount Speke, reaching Vittorio Emanuele Peak at 4,890 meters above sea level.
The ascent takes approximately 4 to 5 hours and rewards hikers with incredible views of:
• Bujuku Valley and Lake
• Mount Stanley including Margherita and Albert Peaks
• Mount Baker
• The distant landscapes of Virunga National Park
After celebrating at the summit, descend back to Bujuku Camp and continue to John Matte Camp for overnight.
The descent takes approximately 3 to 4 hours.
Day 5: John Matte Camp to Nyakalengija
On the final day, the trek descends from John Matte Camp toward Nyabitaba Camp.
Below Guy Yeoman Camp the trail passes through the cliffs of Kichuchu before crossing the Mubuku River twice through bamboo forest.
From Nyabitaba the trail continues through the rainforest back to Nyakalengija, marking the end of your incredible Rwenzori Mountains trekking adventure.
The full descent takes approximately 7 to 8 hours.
