The 5 Days Rwenzori Mountains Nature Walk to Bujuku Hut offers an adventurous trekking experience through one of Africa’s most unique mountain ranges. Located in western Uganda, the Rwenzori Mountains National Park is famous for its glacial peaks, dramatic valleys, and rare afro-alpine vegetation.

Often referred to as the Rwenzori Mountains, this UNESCO World Heritage Site provides an extraordinary trekking environment characterized by lush rainforests, bamboo zones, giant lobelias, moss-covered rocks, and spectacular mountain scenery.

This five-day adventure follows sections of the Central Circuit Trail, leading hikers through diverse ecosystems before reaching high mountain passes and offering the opportunity to summit Mount Baker, one of the famous peaks in the Rwenzori range.

Day 1: Nyakalengija to Nyabitaba Camp

Your trekking adventure begins at the base of the mountains in Nyakalengija, where the offices of Rwenzori Mountaineering Services are located.

After meeting your guides and porters and preparing the necessary trekking equipment, the trail starts through local farmland before entering the boundaries of Rwenzori Mountains National Park.

The path follows the Mubuku River through dense tropical forest and crosses the Mahoma River before climbing steeply along a ridge toward Nyabitaba Camp.

During this section of the trek, hikers may encounter wildlife such as:

• Black-and-white colobus monkeys
• Blue monkeys
• Chimpanzees (often heard in the forest canopy)
• The colorful Rwenzori Turaco

The hike takes approximately 6 to 7 hours.

Overnight at Nyabitaba Camp.

Day 2: Nyabitaba Camp to Guy Yeoman Camp

After breakfast, the trek continues along Mpanga Ridge descending toward the river valley before entering dense bamboo forest.

The trail passes across slippery moss-covered rocks before reaching Nyamuleju Rock Shelter, where hikers enjoy spectacular views of Mount Stanley and Mount Speke.

From here the landscape gradually changes into the afro-alpine vegetation zone characterized by giant heathers, lobelias, and groundsels.

After crossing a challenging bog section of the trail, you arrive at Guy Yeoman Camp for dinner and overnight.

The trek takes approximately 7 to 8 hours.

Day 3: Guy Yeoman Camp to Freshfield Pass

Early in the morning the trek continues through the beautiful Mubuku Valley toward the historic rock shelters of Bujongolo and Kandahi. These sites served as base camps during the famous 1906 expedition by the Duke of Abruzzi, one of the earliest documented explorations of the Rwenzori Mountains.

The trail then climbs steeply along rocky slopes toward Freshfield Pass, offering breathtaking views of the surrounding peaks and alpine landscapes.

Overnight camping at Freshfield Pass.

The hike takes approximately 5 to 6 hours.

Day 4: Freshfield Pass – Mount Baker Summit – Return to Guy Yeoman

This day begins with an early morning ascent to the summit of Mount Baker, reaching Edward Peak, one of the prominent peaks within the Rwenzori range.

The climb to the summit takes approximately 3 to 4 hours, rewarding trekkers with spectacular views of glaciers, valleys, and the surrounding mountain ranges.

After reaching the summit, descend back to Freshfield Pass before continuing along steep rocky trails back to Guy Yeoman Camp.

The descent takes approximately 5 to 6 hours.

Overnight at Guy Yeoman Camp.

Day 5: Guy Yeoman Camp to Nyakalengija

On the final day of the trek, begin the long descent back toward Nyakalengija.

Below Guy Yeoman Camp, the route descends through the cliffs of Kichuchu before crossing the Mubuku River twice through bamboo forest.

The trail eventually reconnects with Nyabitaba Camp before continuing through the tropical rainforest to the park entrance.

The full descent takes approximately 7 to 8 hours, concluding your remarkable Rwenzori trekking adventure.
