Rising above the lush landscapes of Volcanoes National Park, Mount Karisimbi offers one of the most challenging and rewarding hikes in East Africa. Standing at 4,507 meters, it is the highest of the Virunga Volcanoes and the sixth highest mountain in Africa.
This short yet intense adventure takes you through bamboo forests, alpine meadows, and volcanic ridges to a dramatic, often mist-covered summit. Named after the Kinyarwanda word amasimbi (meaning “white shell”), Karisimbi is famous for its snow-dusted peak and breathtaking views across Rwanda, Uganda, and the Congo.
Perfect as a complement to gorilla trekking, this hike combines physical challenge with stunning scenery, offering a true wilderness experience in the heart of Rwanda.
Day 1: Kigali to Musanze – Gateway to the Virunga Mountains
Your journey begins in Kigali, where you meet your guide and set off on a scenic drive դեպի Musanze, the gateway to Volcanoes National Park. The rolling hills and terraced countryside provide a beautiful introduction to Rwanda’s landscapes.
Arrive in time to relax at your lodge, enjoy dinner, and prepare for the adventure ahead.

Day 2: Mount Karisimbi Hike – Into the Clouds
After an early breakfast, head to the park headquarters for a briefing before beginning your ascent of Mount Karisimbi. The trail winds through dense forest, gradually opening into alpine vegetation with sweeping views of the Virunga ranges, including nearby Mount Bisoke.
The climb is steady and demanding, taking approximately 6–7 hours to reach the high camp at around 3,700 meters. As the air cools and the landscape becomes more rugged, you’ll feel the true sense of mountain wilderness.
Spend the night camping under the stars, surrounded by the silence of the high-altitude environment.

Day 3: Summit & Descent – Return to Kigali
Wake early for the final push to the summit. The climb to the top rewards you with breathtaking panoramic views stretching across Rwanda, Uganda, and the Democratic Republic of Congo.
After celebrating your achievement, begin the descent back through the changing vegetation zones to the starting point. Your guide will then transfer you back to Kigali, where your adventure concludes.
